Believe it or not, underneath that sand is actually a river with hot water. Yup, that sand actually comes from Mount Merapi eruption in Yogyakarta (Find out where it is if you don’t know). Mount Merapi erupted in October 2010 and it was one of the biggest eruptions ever. More than 150 people died due to the eruption, including the well-known Mountkeeper, Mbah Maridjan. Now, the Indonesian government are trying to dig the sand out so that the river can be functioned again. The locals also gain benefit from the sand because they can take the sand and sell it. The black gold, they named it.
